Blendtec Blenders – Are they Worth the Price?

The Blendtec Blender is arguably one of the more expensive blenders on the market. But does its cost match its value?

Does it really blend that much better than a $50 or $100 machine?

That is the question of the day whenever we see the price tag for an expensive blender like this one.

Blendtec made their blenders famous with the campaign of blending anything and everything under the sun. This was done to show the world how powerful the blades and the blenders were compared to the current offerings on the market.

Needless to say, Blendtec really made an impression on people.

This brand is in the realm of commercial grade blenders as well as near-commercial, high end home use machines. They are much more powerful than the average blenders that most people might ever use. With that in mind, the average home consumer will pay much more than for one than say an Oster or Kitchenaid – but in return they will own one of the highest quality blenders in the market.

Here’s a weird tidbit… the blade is dull and is designed that way!

It is designed to be more than your average blending blade. It can also grind grains, which is not something you want to do with an ordinary blender. Grinding grains on a sharp blade is one of the fastest ways to dull it out very quickly.

Does Having Industrial Strength Make it a Better Blender?

Blendtec is known for blending everything that isn’t food in the blenders.

They have disintegrated wood, phones, books, all manner of electronics, and everything that you wouldn’t normally put in a blender.

The whole point of doing this is to show the world how powerful the Blendtec blender really is. And IT IS!!!!

But for many folks, a blender like this can be considered overkill. The general public is not in the habit of taking a piece of hardwood and abusing their blender to see if it will blend. Most people use blenders for making baby food, smoothies, soups, sauces, purées, and batter.

Blendtec is one of the best smoothie blenders ever made.

Needless to say, the marketing ploy worked.

Their brand is still going strong today, and Blendtec creates some of the best blenders on the market. The ability to blend is not an issue for Blendtec. They have commercial grade machines that will stand up to the most rigorous abuse restaurants and hotels can put it through. At this point, Blendtec has had plenty of time to not only perfect their machines, but to see if their machines stand the test of time and last. If they don’t, it will be mighty hard to justify a $500 price tag.

The Company and the Man Behind It

Tom Dickson is the inventor behind the revolutionary Blendtec blender. His quest began in 1975 when he revolutionized the way grains were milled. He took it from the Stone Age where stone ground grains were prominent and invented a way to grind grain using stainless steel instead of stone.
Not long after Tom revolutionized the way grains were milled, he created his company, Blendtec.

Utilizing his inventor instincts, he created blenders using some of the smartest technology available. As soon as YouTube came out, he created the viral campaign called “Will it blend?” It became wildly popular because of the kinds of things he would put in the blender.

His engineering prowess created an entire industry around blending, grinding, and mixing, and kneading. Suffice to say his blenders are used in homes, restaurants, smoothie shops, coffee shops, and hotels around the world.

Tom doesn’t sit behind a desk. Tom is still up in a lab, perfecting his trade and trying to figure out what he can blend next.

What to Expect and How It Works

For something that can costs upwards from $399, I would expect something other than a plastic jar. However, it does contain their patented stainless steel grinding blade – which oddly enough is not sharp. And it was designed that way.

I will say I was kind of surprised to see a touch sensitive surface rather than the traditional spring-loaded buttons that I’m used to.

Thier square jar is very large, making it very convenient to add larger chunks of food which saves a ton of time on prep work.

It features a 13-amp motor and is very comparable in many ways to the Vitamix blender. The included recipe book is designed to take advantage of the automatic preset settings of the blender – allowing you to make full use of your blender straight out-of-the-box.

In every one of my tests, where I blended everything from blueberry muffin mix to grinding meat, it did quite well – something I expect for such an expensive blender. What I did not like about it was the way it handled small quantities of food.

This is almost an industrial type blender. If you plan on making use of all of its functions – from kneading bread to grinding meat and from using it as a flour mill to a smoothie blender – then it might justify the price. If you are the occasional at-home chef, then you will have a very expensive hobby gadget in your kitchen.

The Wildside concept, according to the instruction booklet and DVD that it came with, has to do with the shape of the jar. Underneath the handle, or behind it, you will see that the jar is not square. In fact, it includes a fifth side, sort of like they cut off one of the corners. They claim that the unique shape blends food better due to the vortex it creates. So bottom line – it’s science, baby!

What Others Have Said

Out of 263 reviews on Amazon.com, it’s received a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. Most people who are looking into buying this blender also look at its market competitor from Vitamix. The most constructive critical review that I read had to do with the learning curve. The learning curve of the Blendtec wonder is much higher than that of the comparable Vitamix.

However, given some time, many users felt this blender ended up being more intuitive and easier to use than the Vitamix blender. Everyone else had nothing but good things about the blender, often quoting it as the best blender on the market.

Here are a few examples of customer feedback:

“No water, just ice cubes – you get snow. If you look on YouTube, many will compare the Vitamix vs. this unit where they add water. Screw that, test it without water and let’s see how the narrow Vitamix container does compared to this! The nearly straight sides were a great idea by Blendtec engineers, and the touch screen is the best tech available today. No worries about wearing out buttons, it relies on the same technology smartphones use.”

“The wildside jar was the right choice. This does not need any tamper and blends very well. Powerful and clean as is, this is the best blender. The delivery was timely with no problem. Thank you.”-By Michinori Murataon November 24, 2012

“I had a black and decker blender for years and never got my smoothies like in Jamba Juice lol. I went to Costco the other day and saw the Vitamix presentation, but it was too big and expensive, so I decided to go for the Ninja 1100. After making a shake, I returned the Ninja the next day, and since I had a coupon from Bed Bad and Beyond, I went to check out their blenders. I compared the Vitamix with the Blendtec and decided to go for the Blendtec. I am amazed at the results. I made soup, smoothie, sorbet and ice cream, and I cannot believe I did not buy it years ago, definitely worth it.”

What to Watch Out For

This is an industrial-strength machine. It is not meant for the occasional cook or folks that live off of frozen pizzas. It is designed for those who love to cook and do so a lot. Those who will take full advantage of the power and function it offers.

The biggest drawback of this blender is the price. At just under $500, it is very difficult to justify for the casual culinary enthusiast.

Despite all the things you can make with this machine, if you don’t make family sized quantities of food, this machine will not be worth it for you. You might even get frustrated because it will not blend as well because the amount is so small.

For larger amounts of food designed for feeding a family of 4 people or more, this blender can very easily be one of the best investments you can make.

As a smoothie blender, it is one of the best smoothie makers money can buy.

Buying Advice

Now and then, some people might end up with a lemon of a product or a having something else go wrong with it. However, this is more often due to buying through disreputable vendors selling used machines rather than the machine itself.

With that in mind – stay away from ebay or craigslist!

One of the best places to purchase this and also find a great price is from Amazon.com. I’m only saying this because if you do get the blender on Amazon, they will take it back for you. When you do get a machine, it will probably be one of the highest quality devices in your house.

They hold their merchants responsible for their products. They have an incredible world-class customer service team. Amazon is a legitimate, reputable vendor, and their online retail platform is the best in the world.

This just could be is one of the highest quality blenders you will ever have the pleasure of owning. The versatility of a high-quality blender, what you can do with it and what you can make with it may easily surprise you.

Final Recommendation

My experience with this machine made me think “Wow – what power!!” Your experience should be similar.

Although I would not call it the very best of the best, it still is a fantastic American made product which is well worth considering before you buy your next countertop blender.

I would also suggest you read up on the highly coveted Vitamix product line before you run out to buy a Blendtec. There are several Vitamix articles on this site, but you can start with this one here: Is Vitamix Worth It or just Over Priced and Over Hyped?

Once you have reviewed the information about both makes, just decide which blender fits best with your wants, needs and budget – then go with it!
