Breville Juicer Blender Combo Machine Review

How About the Breville Blender Juicer Machine?

If you've been looking for a machine which can truly convert from a blender to a juice machine, you've landed in the right place.

juicer blender
Breville seems to be the only company to come out and offer a true juicer blender combo machine that’s been able to stick around a few years to get some decent user reviews.

This might just be a case of you get what you pay for!

If you happen to have already read my post called: The Best Blender Juicer Machines on this website, you’ll already know that two of the other dual purpose machines just failed miserably.

Finding ONE machine that can do both juicing and blending really well seems to be a tall order.

Was it just a coincidence that the poor performing machines showing a lot of lousy consumer feedback were under $100?

I say no surprise.

Sometimes you do need to pay more to get quality and a good value for your buck. It’s as simple as that, folks!

Knowing what I know about mechanical devices, electronics and quality materials, I simply can’t fathom how any manufacturer could come up with a quality, long lasting juicer or blender for under $100 – much less a combo machine.

So if you *gasp* for a moment when you see the list price of this Breville – catch your breath and then understand this…

There are high quality blenders on the market at the same price point and even higher than this machine that don’t offer the separate juicing function.

Same goes for juice machines. Most don’t morph into blenders.

And since a video is worth about a million words, watch the one below to see how this blender juicer machine switches from one function to the other.

Now if you ever saw the movie Fat Sick & Nearly Dead, you would know about the journey of Joe Cross, an Australian traveling across the USA with his Breville juicer in the back of his truck.

All he lived off of for 60 days was fresh made juice (this was a physician supervised juice fast).

His extreme juice fast helped him lose a lot of weight and become healthy after suffering from a serious medical issue in addition to obesity.

Now I don’t think it’s any coincidence that his juicer was a Breville, as they are an Australian company. All the machines are also designed in Australia at their research center located in Sydney.

So what else would an Aussie bloke buy, right?!  Seriously though…

All I am saying is that just because this brand was in a movie, it doesn’t make it the be all and end all of juice machines.

But plenty of Breville owners do seem to LOVE this machine.

What you Need to Know About The Juicing Function

Rated 3.5 Stars as a Juicer

This machine uses the centrifugal method to extract the juice which is the most widely available and traditionally used type juicer for the home and even many juice bars.

So what about that?

Here’s what is important for you to know…

This type of machine works very well with fruits and hard vegetables like apples & carrots, but not too well with leafy greens. This is exactly because it’s a centrifugal juicing machine.

You are better off making smoothies if you want to drink your greens. Or else you’ll need to buy a masticating juicer.

You see, centrifugal juicers extract the juice with a fast-spinning steel blade that spins against a mesh filter, separating juice from the produce flesh using centrifugal force.

However, while the blade inside the juicer spins it also generates heat, destroying some of the enzymes and micro-nutrients in the process.

Another issue is oxidation affecting the nutrients and making your juice less potent.

Centrifugally produced juice begins to separate almost immediately due to premature oxidation during the extraction process. This type of juice also comes out quite foamy on top – kind of like the foam head you see on glass of freshly poured beer!

So to get any real benefit from the juice made by this type of machine, you need to drink it within 15 minutes of it being made.

Juicing Purists Prefer Cold Pressed

Using a cold-pressed method, the juice machine slowly grinds the produce using an auger to press out the juice. This is the type of machine you need for juicing leafy greens or wheat grass.

There is little to no heat during the process so it results in a juice that’s not only better in flavor but also superior in nutritional value.

Cold pressed juice is said to have up to five times the amount of vitamins, trace minerals and enzymes as a typical centrifugally produced juice. Cold-pressed juice can also be kept fresh for up to 72 hours.

How Well This Machine Makes Juice

Users have indicated that this machine makes better juice when you do not use the highest speed setting. It just works too fast and does get as much juice out of the produce.

Set it on #1 for soft fruit like oranges and on #2 or#3 for apples or harder fruits to get the best results.

As was explained earlier on, since this is a centrifugal juicer it is not very good at juicing leafy greens. No centrifugal juice machine is. And if that’s what you really want to do, look into buying an Omega or Champion masticating juice machine for about $300 – $400.

Cleaning Up the Juice Machine Parts

Most people find the parts are easy to clean as long as you take the machine apart right after you are done juicing. Best to rinse it right away. Depending on what kind of juice you make, you might need to scrub the mesh screen with a brush to get all the particles out of it.

What you Should Know About the Blending Capability

Rated 4.5 Stars as a Blender

If you want a blender for making smoothies and crushing ice then you’ll need a powerful motor. Normally you would want something about 2 to 3 peak horsepower.

Why?

Blenders with that much power have been designed for many years of use and usually come with longer warranties. Like from 5 to 8 years!

Typical economy blenders only offer a 1 year warranty.

Not all blender manufacturers rate their blenders according to horsepower so it’s important to understand “wattage” and “peak” performance. So you’ll know, 745.69 watts = 1 hp.

Wattage is just another way to describe the power of a motor. The more wattage, the more power it has to handle heavier blending loads.

But wattage isn’t the whole story.

Today, with the advantage of using better technology, a blender motor can draw less wattage and still perform at a high level.

High quality blenders can now “adjust” to the blending load. All that means is you will save on power usage, have less “wear and tear” on the motor so it lasts for a long time.

So the actual warranty length is a telling feature!

Also, the overall design of the jug and blades will affect how the mixture is able to circulate. A powerful motor can only compensate so much for poor design.

Most feedback from owners of this machine indicate it does a great job with making smoothies an that they turn out, well, smooth!

Beware of assembling things properly!

If you don’t screw on the bottom correctly it will leak. Seems to be a bit tricky for a bunch of people. But I don’t think this is an entirely unique problem associated with just this blender model.

Cleaning Up the Blender Parts

Since the jug is made of glass, it’s a whiz to clean up and nothing will stain it. However, it’s heavier than a stainless or polymer jug – plus it can chip if you bang it too hard or break if you drop it.

It’s best to unscrew the bottom from the jug and remove the blade as well as gasket to wash them all separately after each use.

This way you won’t have any build up of gunk between the glass and the stainless part of the jug. That’s normally what can happen due to some of the liquid that doesn’t wash out completely when you rinse out the jug while it’s still assembled.

Final Thoughts & Conclusion

Rated 4 Stars as a Juicer & Blender Combo Machine

There are a lot of happy customers who own this machine and they are very satisfied with the blending and juicing results.

It's important to note that some of those reports came through after 2 and even 3 years of use. So people have remained satisfied after a fair period of time.

Personally, I used to have a centrifugal juicer but switched to a cold pressing juice machine when my old juicer died. I wanted the healthier, more potent juice and the ability to process some leafy greens.

My Omega VRT350 juicer cost me $359 plus tax. No blender included!

As for the blender part, this Breville does a SUPER job.

The only question I ponder is how long it will last if you use it daily and often use it to process ice? I haven’t found much info for that quite yet.

What you should do now…

Consider how you will use your machine – what you want to process most and how often. This Breville Juice & Blend could in fact be the perfect machine combo for you and many people.

It all depends on how you’ll use it and what kind of juice you want to make.

If you want a high powered blender that you’ll use sometimes make juice, I’d suggest you skip over and take a look at my Blendtec and Vitamix reviews before you decide to buy this Breville.

But if you want a REAL  juicer / blender combo machine – this Breville is your best bet by a long shot. And before you buy, don't miss out on possibly the best online deals  -- check the prices on Amazon:
